Grand Valley State University, or GVSU for short, is a public American liberal arts university located in Allendale, which is an unincorporated community in Ottawa County, in Michigan state, USA, with a population estimated at a number of more than 11 500 inhabitants, during the 2000 census.
GVSU was established in 1960, and it accepted its first class, three years later, which consisted of only 226 students, today, the university having a total student enrollment approximated at a number of more than 24 000.
In addition to the main campus in Allendale, Grand Valley State University also has two satellite campuses in the surrounding area, but, most of the university's educational programs are offered at the main campus. Overall, GVSU offers its students educational programs in more than 200 areas of study, including 77 undergraduate majors and 28 graduate programs, at the certificate, bachelor's, post-bachelor's, master's, post-master's, and doctoral levels.
GVSU's athletic teams are known as the Grand Valley State Lakers, who compete in NCAA Division II, in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC), in 9 men's and 10 women's varsity sports. In total, the teams have won seven national championships in four sports and have been national runners-up thirteen times in eight sports, the Lakers also winning the prestigious National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) Directors' Cup for NCAA Division II, every year, between 2004 and 2010, in 2002 and 2003 finishng 2nd.
Their official mascot is Louie the Laker, and their distinctive colors are blue, black and white.
Among the most noteworthy names, on the list of notable GVSU alumni, there are: John R. Beyrle - United States Ambassador to the Russian Federation, Keyonta Marshall - former NFL defensive tackle for the New York Jets, Patrick Sheane Duncan - screenwriter, director (Mr. Holland's Opus, Courage Under Fire), and John Keating - Fox Sports Net personality, who used on air name of Steve Knight while in Grand Rapids, among several others.
